Directions for 9/20

Welcome to class!

Today, you will be practicing the reading strategies of determining importance and monitoring comprehension as you read in Beowulf
Begin at p. 22…

Read remainder of chapter 2 (lines 50-103) and answer these questions in your notes.
  •  What makes Grendel fierce and terrible?
  •  How do Hrothgar’s kingdom and his men respond to Grendel?
  • What is done to try to appease Grendel and keep him from coming back?
  •  Does it work?  Why or why not?
  • What is the one place Grendel will not go, shows fear of?
Next, read chapters 3 & 4 (lines 104-189) and answer these questions in your notes.
  • How is Beowulf first introduced?
  • Why does he go to help Hrothgar’s kingdom?
  • How does he attempt to explain his exceptional qualities as a warrior?
Finally, read chapter 5 (lines 190-232) and answer these questions in your notes.
  • Describe the qualities that you feel make Hrothgar a good king, based on what he says in this section.
When you are done with these reading sections and questions, please read silently for the remainder of the hour or you may begin work on your Creative Expression choice.  Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.
