- First, read about trench poets on p. 932.
- Next, decide if you'd like to read Sassoon's "The Rear-Guard" p. 926 or Owen's "Dulce et Decorum Est" on p. 929.
- After reading your chosen poem, answer questions 1-7 following the poem (p. 927 and p. 930, respectively).
- Then, with a partner or independently, go to this site and read more about trench poetry. Choose two more poems to read.
- Write a summary of each poem. In your summary, discuss:
- what happens in the poem
- how the poet uses imagery and word choice effectively
- the role that irony, heroism, and/or realism play in the poem
