These are the discussion cues we have used for the theme topics in 1984:
SOCIALISM & GOVERNMENT
1. Socialism is inherently an attractive option to many people at the initial stages. Find out what socialism is, and discuss in your groups what redeeming qualities this governmental system has, and why it might have been very attractive to people in 1948? Today?
2. In 1984, socialism has become an elevated form of communism and taken a turn for the worse. Outline together what were the original intentions of aspects of the govt. (ex. Ministry of Truth), and then how corruption and lust for control and power have since warped and altered these intentions.
FREEDOM
3. What has this society done to impede the rights and freedoms of its citizens? Why?
4. How is Winston attempting to get some of his freedoms back? Give some specifics.
5. What are the risks involved with these endeavors?
6. What obstacles lie in his way?
7. Why is he willing to take these risks?
8. Take notes about freedom ideals presented in movie clips in class.
FREEDOM OF INFORMATION & PROTECTION OF CITIZENS VS. PRIVACY RIGHTS
9. What are your personal feelings about these topics?
10. Watch "The Facebook Effect" CBS mini documentary, concerning many of the issues associated with social networking and the theme listed above. Take notes on the appeals of credibility, emotion, and logic as they are used both positively and negatively throughout the film.
